چکیده

We have modeled irradiated planets located near a dM5 and a G2 primary star. The impinging radiation field was explicitly included in the solution of the radiative transfer equation and in the computation of the atmospheric structure. We find that large errors in both the thermal and reflected flux will result from models which do not include the impinging radiation in a self-consistent manner. A cool (Teff = 500K) and a hot (Teff = 1000K) planet were modeled at various orbital separations from both the dM5 and the G2 primary. In all scenarios, we compared the effects of the irradiation in two extreme cases: one where dust clouds form and remain suspended in the atmosphere, and another where dust clouds form but completely settle out of the atmosphere. The atmospheric structure and emergent spectrum strongly depend on the presence or absence of dust clouds. We find that, in the absence of dust opacity, the impinging radiation significantly alters the innermost layers of an EGP atmosphere and that they are actually brighter in the optical than dusty planets. Our models also indicate that the planet-to-star brightness ratio in the optical will be less that 1 × 10 for objects like τ böotis which is consistent with recently reported upper limit values. Hydrodynamic Simulations of Unevenly Irradiated Jovian Planets

We employ a two-dimensional grid-based hydrodynamic model to simulate upper atmospheric dynamics on extrasolar giant planets. The hydrodynamic equations of motion are integrated on a rotating, irradiated sphere using a pseudospectral algorithm. We use a two-frequency two-stream approximation of radiative transfer to model the temperature forcing. This model is well-suited to simulate the dynami...

Thermal Structure and Radius Evolution of Irradiated Gas Giant Planets

We consider the thermal structure and radii of strongly irradiated gas giant planets over a range in mass and irradiating flux. The cooling rate of the planet is sensitive to the surface boundary condition, which depends on the detailed manner in which starlight is absorbed and energy redistributed by fluid motion. We parametrize these effects by imposing an isothermal boundary condition T ≡ Td...

We review our present understanding of the physical properties of substellar objects, brown dwarfs and irradiated or non-irradiated gaseous exoplanets. This includes a description of their internal properties , mechanical structure and heat content, their atmospheric properties, thermal profile and emergent spectrum, and their evolution, in particular as irradiated companions of a close parent ...

Evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets . The case of HD 209458

We present evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets. The models reproduce the main trends of observed methane dwarfs in near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. We also present evolutionary models for irradiated planets, coupling for the first time irradiated atmosphere profiles and inner structures. We focus on HD 209458-like systems and show that irradiation effects ca...

Analysis of Spitzer Spectra of Irradiated Planets: Evidence for Water Vapor?

Published mid infrared spectra of transiting planets HD 209458b and HD 189733b, obtained during secondary eclipse by the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, are predominantly featureless. In particular these flux ratio spectra do not exhibit an expected feature arising from water vapor absorption short-ward of 10μm. Here we suggest that, in the absence of flux variab...
